Do you remember what high school was like? All of the challenges of making friends, keeping up with social expectations, getting good grades – it wasn’t easy for most of us.

Now, imagine you are gay. Your father has kicked you out. The older boyfriend you have come to trust has turned his back on you. You are sick. You are HIV positive.

And it is one month before your high school graduation.

The tenth annual AFTGC/CAN benefit will be an event not to be missed! Jacqueline Susann’s “Valley of the Dolls” began as a best-selling novel in 1966, before becoming a blockbuster motion picture the following year. Now, it’s a theatrical event! The stage adaptation of the hit film has been performed only a handful of times, so this will be a rare chance to see this cult classic brought to life on the stage. “Valley of the Dolls” tells the story of three young women, Anne Welles, Neely O’Hara and Jennifer North, as they set out with dreams that will bring them to the dizzying heights of fame – and eventual self-destruction! Anne moves to New York City in search of independence and a life of her own, while Neely dreams of being a Broadway star, and Jennifer longs for love and domestic happiness. As their stories unfold, each finds love, fame and happiness – but ultimately loses it all, as booze, treachery and pills known as “dolls” take their toll! Also prominent in the tale is Helen Lawson – the toast of Broadway who has survived her share of ups and downs, and lived to sing about it. The stage show, like the film, features songs by Andre and Dory Previn, including “I’ll Plant My Own Tree” and “It’s Impossible.”

2011 Dancin’ in the Streets

July 31, 2011
3:00 pmto11:00 pm
3:00 pmto11:00 pm

One of Cleveland’s biggest LGBT events raising money and awareness for the AIDS Taskforce and the HIV/AIDS community – Dancin’ in the Streets – returns this year on July 31, 2011. This year’s event is, as it has been since 2005, a collaboration between the AIDS Taskforce of Greater Cleveland and John Katsaros – one of the most philanthropic business owners in the Cleveland’s LGBT community.

AIDS has been with us for the last 30 years and Dancin’ in the Streets has been around for 27 of them. To commemorate 30 years of loss, love and life, the AIDS Taskforce and John Katsaros are proud to announce that this year’s Dancin’ in the Streets will be FREE!

If you are unable to attend, please consider making a contribution by clicking here.
